Veteran Bengali film actor and popular news reader Debraj Roy passed away on 17th October at a private hospital in Calcutta following multiple organ failure. He had been seriously ill for several months. He was 69. He is survived by his actress-wife, Anuradha Roy, who is also herself a well-known news reader.
Debraj had suffered a cerebral attack a few months back.
Debraj debuted in Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi. He was also seen in Mrinal Sen’s Calcutta 71.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over Roy’s demise and extended her condolences to his family. She posted on X, “Saddened by the demise of actor Debraj Roy. An actor who made our eminent directors proud, he was also a popular news reader on Doordarshan. I knew him well as a good man from Bhawanipore and feeling very sad by this loss. My condolences to his family members and friends. Our cultural world stands diminished today.”
