CALCUTTA HC REJECTS PLEA AGAINST CERTIFICATION OF ‘THE BENGAL FILES’ | 9 September, 2025

The Calcutta high court on September 8 set aside a suit challenging the CBFC’s passing of Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s controversial film, The Bengal Files, saying that the petitioner’s contention about the film tarnishing his family’s image wasn’t maintainable.

Lawyer Santanu Mukherjee, grandson of freedom fighter Gopal Mukherjee, had filed a plea on September 8, seeking information under the RTI Act on CBFC’s role in “considering the depiction of a historical figure in the film” and how it evaluated the film. Gopal Mukherjee, also known as Gopal Patha, is shown in the film as helping Muslims too during the Direct Action Day of 1946. Santanu objected to this.
