CBFC STALLS ‘SANTOSH’ RELEASE IN INDIA | 26 March, 2025

The Central Board of Film Certification has stalled the release of Shahana Goswami starrer Santosh in India by demanding extensive cuts in it. The CBFC has reportedly blocked the film’s release over concerns about its portrayal of Islamophobia, misogyny, police brutality and sexual violence in the Indian police force. Pertinent to note that Santosh was the United Kingdom’s official entry to Oscars 2025.

Sandhya Suri, the writer- director of the film, described the CBFC’s decision as disappointing and heartbreaking. She explained that the many cuts offered by the CBFC were impossible to implement.

Santosh is set in North India and revolves around the life of a young widow, played by Shahana. She joins the police force and investigates the murder of a young Dalit girl. The film also delves into the issue of sexual violence in India, especially against lower-caste women while also addressing the growing wave of anti-Muslim prejudice in the country.

Santosh premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It earned the BAFTA nomination for the best debut feature this year. Shahana Goswami won the best actress award at the Asian Film Awards for her performance in the film.
