The Delhi high court vide an interim order dated November 10 restrained cricketer Virat Kohli’s restaurant/coffee chain, One8 Commune, from playing songs in which Phonographic Performance Ltd. holds the copyright. Justice C. Hari Shankar said that the order would remain in force till the next date of hearing. It also said that One8 Commune could not play PPL’s songs without obtaining a licence.
PPL had filed the copyright infringement suit against One8 Commune (Cornerstone Sport And Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and others) to restrain it from using the songs of PPL at its restaurants and cafes. It was submitted that One8 Commune was playing PPL’s songs without any copyright licence, and despite a legal notice in this regard being sent to it, it failed to comply with the terms.
