The foundation stone of the Lata Mangeshkar Music Academy was laid on a civic plot at Mira Road in Thane district today (27th September). Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde and both the deputy chief ministers attended the ceremony. Lata Mangeshkar’s birth anniversary falls on 28th September.
The proposal for a music academy in her name was mooted last year by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. The state this year allocated Rs. 25 crore for the Academy. The state government is also establishing the Bharat Ratna Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar International College of Music and Museum in Bombay University’s Kalina campus.
