FTII TO RE-ADMIT COLOUR-BLIND STUDENT NEXT YEAR | 11 May, 2022

The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) told the Supreme Court recently that it would reserve in the next academic year a seat for Ashutosh Kumar, whose admission was cancelled six years ago as he was colour-blind. The apex court, on his plea, also demolished the hurdle imposed by the condition ruling that those who were colour-blind cannot be discriminated against in getting admission in any course in any film and television institute in India.

The Supreme Court, in the case of Ashutosh Kumar’s plea for re-admission, held that the practice followed by the FTII in not allowing colour-blind students admission in certain courses was discriminatory. The Pune-based Institute told a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M.M. Sundresh that it would reserve a seat for the student in the next academic year as it wouldn’t be possible for it to admit him this year. The FTII also assured the court that necessary changes in the curriculum would be carried out to make it friendly to colour-deficient students.
