Within 24 hours of announcing a CID probe into the issue of a police escort being provided to Kannada film actress Ranya Rao at Bangalore airport, where she was arrested last week by DRI sleuths for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kg. gold from Dubai, the Karnataka government has withdrawn the nod for the investigation.
According to sources, the U-turn follows pressure from certain quarters which feared that any disclosure by the police constable, intercepted by DRI sleuths while escorting the actress, could put the police brass in a tight spot.
The state home department justified the withdrawal by saying that another probe was being carried out to ascertain the role of the state protocol wing and that of Ranya’s DGP-father, Ramachandra Rao.
