In a major relief to cinema lovers in Karnataka, chief minister Siddaramaiah today (March 7) has capped cinema ticket prices at Rs. 200.
Multiplexes in the state, like in the rest of the country, charge exorbitant prices, especially for big-budget films. The admission price for a film could go up to Rs. 500 or even Rs. 1,000.
The capping has been done in the Karnataka state Budget for 2025-26.
Additionally, the Congress government announced that the cinema sector will be given industry status, and the facilities given under the industry policy will be extended to the film industry as well.
The Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy will hold 2.5 acres of property in Nandini Layout, Bangalore, where a multiplex will be built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
A digital and non-digital Kannada film repository will be established at a cost of Rs. 3 crore with the goal of conserving Kannada films while identifying social, historical and cultural aspects.
The CM also announced the creation of a state-run OTT platform for the promotion of Kannada films.
To fulfil the state government’s promise to establish a Film City in the coming years, the government has transferred 150 acres of land to the Department of Information and Public Relations to create a Film City in Mysore.
