‘KOOKI’ REVIEW | 28 June, 2024

Niri Media OPC Pvt. Ltd.’s Kooki (UA) is the story of a 16-year-old girl who is gang-raped.

Kooki (Ritisha Khaund) is brutally raped by three young men. Her advocate-father, Dhananjay Mishra (Rajesh Tailang), fights for justice and he is able to secure it.

The film is based on a concept and story by Dr. Junmoni Devi Khaund. There is nothing new in the story as one has seen many similar stories in past films. Pranab J. Deka, Mrigendra Narayan Konwar, Bishnujyoti Hondikoi and Diksha Khaund have written a screenplay which is neither novel nor exciting. The drama moves on a predictable path so that nothing comes as a surprise. Even the process of tracking down the rapists seems so easy! The four screenplay writers have written dialogues which are ordinary most of the times.

Ritisha Khaund (as Kooki) does a fairly good job in her maiden attempt. Rajesh Tailang is effective as Kooki’s advocate-father, Dhananjay Mishra. Rina Rani is okay as Kooki’s mother, Suman Mishra. Dipannita Sharma is so-so as SP Mandira Singh. Devoleena Bhattacharjee is wasted as reporter Navnita. Bodhisattva Sharma is average as Saptarishi. Ritu Shivpuri is alright as Dr. Priyadarshini. Nancy Singh lends ordinary support as Kooki’s friend, Rashmi. Kamal Lochan (as Rekib Ahmed), Mrigendra Narayan Konwar (as Bikash Talukdar) and Bondip Sharma (as Raju Yadav) are average as the three rapists. Ujjal Kumar (as Pullok Saikia) is passable as the friend of the three rapists. Others do as desired.

Pranab J. Deka’s direction is dull. Music (Pallab Talukdar, Sourav Mahanta and Tapan Jyoti Dutta) is fair. Lyrics (Avinash Chouhan, Ibson Lal Baruah and Dr. Sagar) pass muster. Tapan Jyoti Dutta’s background music is average. Gyan Gautam’s camerawork is nothing to shout about. Action and stunt scenes (by Pradeep Bhabesh) lack thrill. Golok Saha’s art direction is ordinary. Editing (Jhulan Krishna Mahanta and Anup Singh) leaves something to be desired.

On the whole, Kooki lacks commercial value.
