Veteran lyricist Maya Govind breathed her last this morning (7th April) at her residence in Bombay. She was 82 and passed away peacefully. A blood clot had recently developed in her brain, after which some complications followed. Her last rites will be performed at Pawan Hans crematorium at Vile Parle at 3 p.m. today. She was married to writer-director Ram Govind who wrote and directed Tohfa Mohabbat Ka which she produced.
Maya Govind had written a number of film songs. She was an in-demand song writer in the 1980s and 1990s. Among her well-known songs are Nainon mein darpan hai (Aarop), Aankhon mein base ho tum from Takkar, Ab chiragon ka koi kaam nahin (Baawri), Main khiladi tu anadi (Main Khiladi Tu Anari), Teri meri prem kahani (Pighalta Aasman), More ghar aaye sajanwa (Imaandaar), Yeh duniya kya chahe money money (Imaandaar), Vaada bhool na jaana (Jalte Badan), Karale saaf karale (Qaid), Kajare ki baati (Sawan Ko Aane Do), Gutur gutur (Dalaal), Mera piya ghar aaya O Ramji (Yaarana),Aar ya paar (Aar Ya Paar), etc. She had also penned the lyrics for the TV serials Kismat Ka Toh Yehi Fasana Hai and Maayka (title song). Maya Govind was also a famous poetess.
Before she entered the film industry, she used to teach Hindi, Music and History in school. She was first noticed by actor Bharat Bhooshan in a kavi sammelan. Bharat Bhooshan’s producer-brother, R. Chandra, signed Maya Govind to write the lyrics for three films but, unfortunately, none of the three films got made after Chandra’s demise.
