‘MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU’ (ANIMATION; DUBBED) REVIEW | 1 July, 2022

Illumination Entertainment’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru (animation; dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name) is the story of 12-year-old Gru who has been a fan of Vicious 6, a team of supervillains. Gru hatches a plot to join the team — and he does — after the team leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, is ousted. One day, Gru steals a precious stone from them with the help of minion-friends. Obviously, he becomes the enemy of Vicious 6. He realises, he would have to seek help to save his life. Whom does he turn to?

Brian Lynch and Matthew Fogel have written a story which is not just for the kids but is also kiddish. Their screenplay does not hold the audience’s interest for too long, more so because it is an animation film. As is known, animation films work in India only if they have an exceptional story.

Voice acting of the various artistes is good.

Kyle Balda’s direction is average. Heitor Pereira’s background music is ordinary. Animation is of a good standard. Claire Dodgson’s editing is a bit loose.

On the whole, Minions: The Rise Of Gru is a weak fare for the Hindi-speaking audience.
