Netflix on December 13 released a list of its globally most watched 1,000 films and shows during the period January-June 2023. The report — ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report’ — which showed the ranking of films and shows, said that non-English content generated 30% of all viewing. Such reports will now be published by the OTT platform twice a year.
As per the report, Indian show Rana Naidu Season 1 was the 330th most viewed title globally. Other Indian films and series in the list were:
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (att position 395; 41.70 million hours)
Mission Majnu (593; 31.20 million hours)
Indian Matchmaking: Season 3 (609; 30.60 million hours)
Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway (645; 29.60 million hours)
RRR (654; 29.40 million hours)
Class Season 1 (718; 27.70 million hours)
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (756; 27.10 million hours)
Shehzada (834; 24.80 million hours)
Some of the other Indian content at spots after 1,000 are:
Scoop (1,242)
Gumraah (1,431)
Khakee: The Bihar Chapter (1,463)
Trial By Fire: Limited Series (1,606)
Delhi Crime: Season 1 (3,682)
Sacred Games: Season 1 (4,536)
As the list indicates, the top-ranking films in it may not have much to do with their box-office performance. In fact, it is likely that commercially less successful or even unsuccessful films may be higher in the OTT list as they have more viewership on the OTT platform than the super-successful ones which have been watched in the cinemas (and are, therefore, so successful at the box-office).
The total combined viewership time of all the reported titles was a whopping 93.46 billion hours. It is likely that the longer shows may have more viewership (in terms of hours watched) because of their running time.
