Producer-director-actor and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is convicted of rape and murder, was released on a 30-day parole on January 28. The release coincides with Haryana preparing for civic elections and the Delhi Assembly polls on February 5. The timing of his parole has drawn criticism due to the Dera Sacha Sauda’s huge following and its history of political support for the BJP since 2014.
According to records, Ram Rahim Singh has been out of jail for 121 days since January 20, 2024. This is the fourth parole or furlough in just the last year and his twelfth in the 305 parole days since becoming eligible for such benefits on October 24, 2020.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is serving a 20-year jail sentence following his conviction by a special CBI court in Panchkula on August 25, 2017, for the rape of two women disciples. He was also convicted for the murder of a journalist.
