A plea has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking an FIR against Kangana Ranaut and others for allegedly tarnishing the image of Sikhs in her Emergency. Posters of the film were burnt on the streets of Chandigarh on August 27. A legal notice by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also been served on the actress-producer-director.
Kangana plays Indira Gandhi in the film slated for release on September 6.
The petition, filed by Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh of Mohali, claims that Kangana Ranaut has made the film with malicious intent and demands the deletion of “objectionable” scenes from the film. It also claims that the film attempts to rip the social fabric of Punjab. It seeks directives to include eminent Sikh personalities in a high court-monitored committee to review the film and grant of certificate by the CBFC before permitting its release.
The same claims were made in the legal notice served on Kangana and other producers by the SGPC. The legal notice seeks a written apology for the alleged misrepresentation of facts and history, and demands that the trailer be removed from public platforms and social media platforms.
The film portrays many Sikh characters, including Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, as terrorists and separatists. Sikh outfits hit the roads, torching the film’s posters in Bathinda. They demanded Kangana’s arrest and urged theatre owners to refrain from screening the film.
