The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s new policy for erecting film studios in the city on a temporary basis may include a clause which precludes construction of any film studio structure on the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) land. In the March 2019 policy, there was no such restriction. The likely change is the result of several unauthorised works being undertaken on CRZ land in the Madh region of Bombay, leading to violation of coastal norms.
It may be recalled that the BMC commissioner had ordered an inquiry against unauthorised construction of studios at Madh, Marve, Erangal, Bhati and Malad in Bombay by an order dated September 6, 2022.
