SEVEN YEARS’ JAIL FOR ANSALS IN UPHAAR CINEMA FIRE TRAGEDY: REPLY SOUGHT ON APPEALS | 12 November, 2021

A Delhi court on November 10 sought response from the Delhi government and the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) on appeals filed by Sushil and Gopal Ansal, owners of Uphaar cinema, against an order by which they were convicted and sentenced to a 7-year jail term for tampering with evidence in the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy case. Additional sessions judge Anil Antil issued notice on the plea filed by the Ansal brothers. The court also sought a report from the medical superintendent of Tihar Jail after it was submitted that Gopal Ansal was suffering from certain ailments. During the hearing, the accused objected to the locus of AVUT.

A magistrate court had on November 8 sentenced the Ansals to seven years in jail for tampering with evidence in the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire tragedy case in which 59 people had died.
