Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name) is an action-adventure fantasy film of the Marvel Universe of the studio. It is the story of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and his estranged father, Xu Wenwu (also known as Mandarin; Tony Leung).
Xu Wenwu is in possession of ten rings which give him super-powers and have made him immortal. While on a mission to conquer the mythical land of Ta Lo, Xu fights with Jiang Li (Fala Chen) and ends up falling in love with her. The two get married and have two kids, Shang-Chi and Xialing. After Jiang Li’s death, Xu trains little Shang-Chi to become an expert fighter so that he can avenge his mother’s murder. Shang-Chi resents the path adopted by his father and one day, runs away from him. He promises his sister that he would return soon but he settles down in San Francisco. There, under the new name of Sean, he befriends Katy (Awkwafina). Shang-Chi and Katy are content being valets who park the cars of the rich and famous. But Shang-Chi’s real identity is revealed when, while travelling in a bus with Katy, he fights the evil men sent by his father to track him down. Soon, there’s a family reunion as Shang-Chi traces Xialing (Meng’er Zhang). Back home, Shang-Chi learns that his father wants to go to Ta Lo once again to save his dead wife as he thinks, she is actually locked up there. What happens thereafter? Is Jiang Li actually locked up in Ta Lo? Does Shang-Chi assist his father in his mission or does he revolt against him?
Destin Daniel Cretton and Dave Callaham have written an extremely interesting story that has action, emotions, family sentiments, mythology, fantasy, etc. The screenplay, penned by Destin Daniel Cretton, Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, is also very engaging. The first half moves like a bullet and gives the audience absolutely no time to think. The second half also keeps the viewers pretty involved although the interest level dips occasionally and for brief periods of time. The climax is lengthy but it is so eye-filling (what with superb computer graphics and visual effects) that one doesn’t even mind the length. There’s an after-movie-ending scene which is fantastic. It has been beautifully written and executed in an extraordinary manner.
Simu Liu does a fantastic job as Shang-Chi/Sean. Whether in light scenes or romantic ones, he is excellent. Of course, his action and stunts are mind-blowing. Awkwafina is very good as Katy. Tony Leung performs splendidly as Xu Wenwu (Mandarin), often using his eyes and body language to convey his thoughts. Meng’er Zhang lends lovely support in the role of Xialing. Fala Chen is impactful in the role of Jiang Li. Michelle Yeoh (as Jiang Nan) makes her mark beautifully. Ben Kingsley is first-rate. He shines alongwith the creature which he possesses. Florian Munteanu is suitably venomous as the villain with an arm made of a steel blade. Jayden Zhang (as young Shang-Chi) is very cute. Elodie Fong is good as young Xialing. Benedict Wong (as Wong), Wah Yuen (as Master Guang Bo), Andu Le (as Death Dealer), Michael-Anthony Taylor (as the bus driver) and others provide wonderful support.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction is superb. His narrative style makes this masala entertainer very believable and palatable for the audience. His mix of the various ingredients of an entertaining fare in the film is masterly. Joel P. West’s background music is supremely impactful and effective. William Pope’s cinematography deserves special mention because it captures the locations and the characters just too beautifully. Production designing (by Sue Chan and Clint Wallace) is wonderful. Editing (by Elisabet Ronaldsdóttir, Nat Sanders and Harry Yoon) is razor-sharp. Dubbing is of a very high standard.
On the whole, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is a surefire hit.
