Reliance Entertainment today (March 14) announced the final release date of its Sooryavanshi. The Akshay Kumar starrer, directed and produced by Rohit Shetty, will hit the screens on 30th April. The announcement was made today as it is Rohit’s birthday.
The film was to have been released on April 2 but the producers decided against the date in view of the growing number of coronavirus cases in the country in general and in cities like Amravti, Nagpur and Aurangabad in particular. The producers were all along in touch with officials of the Maharashtra government, who did not rule out the possibility of the virus spreading viciously again in cities like Bombay and Pune too. Since Maharashtra is the nerve centre of Bollywood, Reliance and Rohit Shetty thought it better to postpone the film’s release and hence they cancelled the release on April 2. The logic behind choosing April 30 is that by then, almost 18-20 crore people in India will have been vaccinated and hence the mindset of the public will have changed in the next 45 days. Around 2.5-3 crore people have already received one or both doses of the vaccination by now.
There was speculation in the trade that the new release date would be either April 30 or in July. Some had their apprehensions about April 30 because the lean (for the box-office) period will begin around April 15 due to Ramzan which will get over a little before mid-May. But the producers are willing to brave the Ramzan in view of the extraordinary situation of COVID-19. Since Radhe is due for release on Eid (May 13) and Reliance’s own 83 is slated for release on June 4, the earliest Sooryavanshi could be released was in July, if not in April. That’s also a major reason why the makers have opted for April 30. Of course, the final release date pre-supposes that no new lockdowns are announced in any part of the country in the next 45 days and there isn’t a further surge in the number of cases.
While many state governments have permitted 100% occupancy in cinemas, there are states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan, where cinemas are still functioning at 50% occupancy only.
