The Kerala high court on June 8 stayed proceedings against Lakshadweep filmmaker Aisha Sultana for three months in the sedition case against her. Justice Ziyad Rahman’s interim order is in synch with the Supreme Court’s recent directions on curbing the use of sedition charges while the law is being reviewed by the apex court.
Aisha Sultana has been charged with an alleged anti-national comment made by her during a TV news channel debate over COVID-19 protocols in the islands, in which Sultana had said that relaxation of norms amounted to unleashing a bioweapon.
The high court had earlier granted her pre-arrest bail but had not stayed the proceedings.
