One is aware of the difficult times the Hindi film industry is passing through. A number of exhibitors feel, such terrible times are unprecedented. With films flopping left, right and centre, the very survival of cinemas has become tough. The first almost five months of 2024 have been so miserable for the box-office that many exhibitors are fearing that they might have to quit the business. Several multiplexes have shut down one or more screens temporarily, till films start performing well.
Well, the scene in the Telugu film industry is no better. It may probably be worse! For, single-screen cinemas in Telangana have shut down for 10-14 days from May 17. This is because there aren’t any notable films slated for release in the coming days. What’s more, footfalls in the cinemas are at an all-time low. To tide over the testing times, single-screen cinemas decided to down shutters for ten days. The period of closure may extend up to 14 days too. In the interim, if any producer/distributor wants his film to be screened by any single-screen cinemas, they (cinemas) would be ready to oblige provided the said producer/distributor underwrites the loss that may accrue by screening his film. Reportedly, cinemas are incurring lower losses by remaining closed than by screening films for which audience patronage is minimal.
