The first blockbuster of 2019, Uri – The Surgical Strike, was also the biggest blockbuster of the year gone by. It was made at an investment of barely Rs. 35 crore but it netted Rs. 250 crore in India.
Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh was also a blockbuster. The remake of Telugu Arjun Singh netted Rs. 277 crore.
Aditya Chopra’s War, directed by Siddharth Anand, had the audience drooling over Hrithik Roshan’s good looks and over his and Tiger Shroff’s action, stunts and dancing. All of these prompted the film’s producers to dance all the way to the bank as it became the highest-grossing film of 2019. It collected Rs. 318 crore.
Good Newwz was the other big winner. Made at an investment of only Rs. 60 crore, it is all set to join the Rs. 200-crore club. Why, its first week’s collections are Rs. 127 crore!
Dabangg 3 may have not set the box-office cash registers ringing but it proved to be a lottery for producer-actor-writer Salman Khan, thanks to revenues earned from sale of digital, satellite and audio rights. The film will barely be able to touch the Rs. 150-crore mark. Salman’s Bharat netted Rs. 195 crore and although that also proved to be a goldmine for the actor-producer despite not doing too well at the ticket windows, it was a far costlier film than Dabangg 3. In fact, Bharat was the costliest film of Salman and hence does not qualify to be included in the top grossers of 2019.
