VIR DAS’ ‘TWO INDIAS’ CLIP SPARKS POLITICAL DEBATE, LEGAL CASES | 17 November, 2021

Police complaints were filed against actor and stand-up comedian Vir Das yesterday (November 16) for his ‘I come from two Indias’ video which triggered a sharp debate and became controversial no sooner it went viral. The satirist has issued a statement saying that his comments were not intended to insult the country. Politicians from parties like the Congress and the Trinamool Congress spoke in support of Das. But some Congressmen also joined in criticising the satirist.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, which is the umbrella organisation of many craft associations, announced that its members would not work with Vir Das unless he issued an apology.

Meanwhile, BJP vice president Aditya Jha registered a complaint with the police in New Delhi against Vir’s comment that “in India, we worship women in the day, and rape them at night”. He alleged that Vir made derogatory statements on an international platform (John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington DC) with the intention of maligning the country’s image. No FIRs have been filed so far.
