Karan Johar’s Good Newwz is raking in the moolah and seems to be unstoppable. Although it’s the fifth day today, the film is holding on strong at the turnstiles. In fact, the footfalls in the multiplexes and single-screen cinemas on Monday (fourth day) were more than on Friday (first day) and this in spite of the fact that the first day’s attendance in cinemas was very good. Of course, the net total in monetary terms for day 1 was more than on day 4 but that was because of the reduced admission rates after the first weekend.
The debut directorial venture of Raj Mehta started on a pretty exciting note when it netted Rs. 17.56 crore on the first day. Collections increased by around 25% on day 2 which closed at Rs. 21.78 crore. Collections on Sunday were even better at Rs. 25.65 crore so that the first weekend closed at a fantastic Rs. 64.99 crore. Since the word of mouth for the comedy film was phenomenal, the film collected a net of Rs. 13.41 crore on Monday, taking the four-day total to a rather impressive Rs. 78.40 crore. Collections today (Tuesday) have been outstanding, also because of the celebratory mood on the last day of the year, prompting people to head to the cinemas. At the rate at which the film is going, it is a given that the film will join the Rs. 100-crore club in the first show tomorrow (Wednesday). In all probability, the film will have netted Rs. 130 crore or thereabouts in the first week.
This gives an indication that the joint production venture of Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar will soon join the Rs. 200-crore club. As there is no major release on 3rd January, the second week of Good Newwz is also expected to be phenomenal. In fact, it shouldn’t be a surprise if the film crosses the Rs. 175-crore mark in its second week itself. If that happens, there are very good chances of the film being Akshay Kumar’s third Rs. 200-crore film this year, afterMission Mangal and Housefull 4.
Not just for Akshay Kumar but also for Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani, the runaway success of the film would mean a lot. Overseas too, Good Newwz is spreading good cheer among the audience. It is emerging as Akshay Kumar’s best in North America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc. It grossed Rs. 8.24 crore abroad on the first day, Rs. 8.42 crore on the second day, Rs. 7.89 crore on Sunday, and Rs. 4.68 crore on the fourth day. In other words, the total gross for the first four days is Rs. 29.23 crore.
Point to note is that this film will be the biggest hit of Akshay and Kareena together. Before this, the two have jointly delivered either flops or average grossers. Their earlier films, in which both of them have played leading roles are Ajnabee, Aitraaz, Bewafaa and Tashan.
