Ctrl-N Production Pvt. Ltd.’s Y (Marathi; UA) is about illegal sonography to determine the sex of foetuses. Dr. Aarti Deshmukh (Mukta Barve) launches an investigation against Dr. Purushottam Gaikwad’s (Nandu Madhav) hospital where sonographies are done, female foetuses are destroyed and ultimately discarded. How Dr. Aarti Deshmukh exposes the hospital and its illegal activities form the crux of the drama.
Ajit Suryakant Wadikar’s story is alright but moves on a single track. The screenplay, written jointly by Ajit Wadikar, Swapnil Sojwal and Sandeep Dandawate, is confusing at times. Besides, it fails to completely involve the audience. The viewers wonder why Reema (Prajakta Mali) doesn’t reveal about her own sonography and abortion at Dr. Purushottam’s hospital, especially when she has decided to help Dr. Aarti Deshmukh in her mission. The duo’s dialogues are okay.
Mukta Barve does a fine job as Dr. Aarti Deshmukh. Nandu Madhav is good as Dr. Purushottam Gaikwad. Suhas Shirsat is okay as Munna. Omkar Govardhan is alright as Arjun. Sandeep Dandawate (as photographer Dinesh), Prajakta Mali (as Reema), Sandeep Pathak (as Sidram, husband of Reema), Rohit Kokate (as Bashir) and Pradeep Bhosale (as Dr. Agnihotri) lend routine support.
Ajit Suryakant Wadikar’s direction is ordinary. Paraga Chhabra’s background music doesn’t add much to the drama. Rakesh Bhilare’s camerawork is alright. Jayant Jathar’s editing leaves something to be desired.
On the whole, Y is an average fare but will do below-average business.
