Vinod Chopra Films’ Zero Se Restart is about the making of the banner’s hit, 12th Fail.
Although 12th Fail scored at the box-office and also won critical acclaim, it is unlikely that the audience would pay money to see footage of its making. For one, the footage is per se boring. Secondly, there is so much use of technical jargon and of behind-the-scenes terms that it may irritate the audience. Even otherwise, things which are quite normal on film sets are sometimes shown in this ‘making of’ film as if it was the first time ever that a unit had encountered such a problem or roadblock. Frankly, the only purpose why the film seems to have been made appears to be ‘ego’. The director of 12th Fail probably wanted to underline how he overcame countless adversities to make 12th Fail. But even commoners know that filmmaking is not an easy job. Another point which this film seems to hammer is the countless drafts of the script written — and this, when the film is based on a book! Was Vidhu Vinod Chopra keen to have the audience believe that 12th Fail is an original work and, therefore, took so long to write and so many drafts to reach the final draft?
The drama is neither funny/entertaining nor educative. Jaskunwar Kohli’s narration, direction and editing are all found lacking.
All in all, Zero Se Restart, which is about the making of the hit 12th Fail, will fail the box-office test because it is boring, insipid and meaningless. Leave alone restart, it won’t even take a start!
