BABUL SUPRIYO HECKLED AT JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY | 21 September, 2019

Singer, Union minister and BJP’s Asansol MP Babul Supriyo was heckled and assaulted by some students of Jadavpur University on 19th September when he went there to attend a freshers’ welcome organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. A group of violent students, under the aegis of ultra-left unions, blocked Babul’s entry, shouted “Go back” slogans and turned violent when the minister did not retract his steps. He was manhandled when he was preparing to leave at 5 p.m. The agitated students jostled him. Babul fell down, following which they pulled his hair. The minister’s security personnel could not control the situation.

The Bengal governor, Jagdeep Dhankhar, reached the University to diffuse the situation. He was also caught in the protests and stampede-like situation for an hour. Finally, the police came to the rescue of Babul Supriyo and the governor.

The vice chancellor earlier refused to call the police when Supriyo requested him to do so. The VC, Suranjan Das, told Babul, he would rather resign than call the cops.
