Television actor and singer Karan Oberoi was granted bail by the Bombay high court in the rape case filed by a 34-year-old woman who was his friend once upon a time. She had accused him of repeatedly raping her and extorting money from her.
Karan had been arrested on 5th May, a day after the lady registered an FIR. He was sent to judicial custody on May 9. The sessions court did not believe the allegations against the actor-singer but refused to grant him bail on 17th May.
Meanwhile, the woman alleged that she was attacked on May 25 with a sharp object by two unknown persons and threatened with acid to withdraw the rape FIR. However, the lady’s lawyer on 3rd June told the court that she herself had directed the May 25 attack on herself. He said, she had colluded with a relative of his to attack her but developed cold feet when he, after the attack, told the police that he was related to her lawyer (that is, himself). She may now be arrested for conspiracy and also under sections 182 and 203 of the Indian Penal Code relating to providing false information about an offence committed.
