The Bandra police in Bombay registered an FIR on September 6 against the owner and management of the iconic Gaiety-Galaxy cinema complex, also known as G7 Multiplex, for allegedly violating government orders under the Maharashtra Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, and failing to renew its cinema licence since 2021. The cinema stopped its screenings from September 7 after the police posted a closure notice in its premises.
The FIR was registered under section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobedience of an order promulgated by a public servant.
Manoj Desai of Gaiety-Galaxy said that burnt or damaged cinema cables had caused the shutdown. But he did not clarify why the police notice announcing the closure had been put up.
