In a setback to actor Vijay, a division bench of the Madras high court on January 27 set aside a single bench order of January 9, directing the Central Board of Film Certification to grant certificate to his Tamil film, Jana Nayagan, for its theatrical release.
Allowing the CBFC’s appeal against the single judge’s order, the bench remanded the case back to the single bench for fresh consideration after granting adequate opportunity to the CBFC to submit its response to the petition filed by the film’s producer, KVN Productions.
The single judge should have accorded an opportunity to the CBFC to place its version, the court observed, citing serious allegations raised by a member of the CBFC’s examining committee against the film’s content, including scenes depicting foreign powers creating disturbances in the country and against religious harmony.
