Three persons from Kerala, including Malayalam film actor Jayakrishnan, were detained for questioning in Mangalore after a cab driver lodged a police complaint alleging that he was subjected to communal abuse by them. According to the police, the trio booked a cab on the night of October 9 through an app-based service. When the driver, Ahmed Shafiq, contacted them through the app to confirm the location, the individuals allegedly spoke to him in Hindi, using derogatory language and calling him a “Muslim extremist” and “terrorist”, and also abused his mother in Malayalam.
A case was registered on October 10 under BNS sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke) and 353(2) (statements conducting to public mischief).
