NATIONAL AWARD-WINNING BENGALI FILM DIRECTOR RAJA SEN DEAD | 17 August, 2026

Raja Sen, thrice National Award-winning director, breathed his last on 16th August in Calcutta. He had made a number of feature films, telefilms and documentaries. He was 70 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Sen had directed Damu, Atmiyo Swajan, Chakrabyuhya, Desh, Debipaksha, Viswa O Arjun, Krishnakanter Will, Tinmurti, Laboratory, Moubone Aaj, Colonel, Khancha and Maya Mridanga. It was on the set of Maya Mridanga that he had suffered a severe fall which triggered years of declining health and led to major surgery earlier this year for a complex neurological condition.

Raja Sen had won the National Award for the best children’s film for Damu. His Atmiyo Swajan got him the National Award for the best film on family welfare. Rituparna Sengupta, who acted in Atmiyo Swajan and other films directed by the filmmaker, considered him a father figure.
