NEW PARTY IN ASSAM | 17 December, 2019

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on 15th December announced that it was in talks with the state’s Silpi Samaj (artistes’ society) to explore the possibility of forming an alternative to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) albeit without straying from its apolitical roots. This announcement was made at a concert for peace and harmony organised by singer-actor Zubeen Garg at Chandmari in Guwahati. This was after Zubeen repeated what he had said at a similar gathering earlier. “We will have our own political party,” he said, prompting the AASU president, Dipanka Nath, to endorse the idea, for the first time in public.

Nath remarked that the AASU was in talks with the Silpi Samaj and the people of Assam to take this step. The move comes in the wake of the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
