PROUD TO BE INDIAN, SAYS A.R. RAHMAN | 19 January, 2026

Oscar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman on January 18 issued a video statement expressing gratitude for his Indian identity, following a controversy over his recent interview in which he spoke of “a lot of discrimination against the Tamil community within Bollywood”. In the latest video, Rahman said, “I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt. I feel blessed to be Indian, which enables me to create a space which allows freedom of expression, and celebrates multi-cultural voices.” He added, “India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music.”
