The Supreme Court on October 7 refused to relax the pre-condition of depositing Rs. 2 crore for hearing the appeal of actor Rajpal Yadav challenging his conviction and sentence of three months in a cheque-bouncing case. Yadav’s counsel told a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana that he had brought a demand draft for Rs. 1.15 crore and had entered into an agreement with one Anand Prakash Yadav, who was also present in court, to sell his property. The actor sought time till October 13 to deposit the balance Rs. 85 lakh. The apex court agreed and protected him from surrendering to undergo the jail term.
The case was posted for further hearing on October 13.
Rajpal Yadav had taken a loan of Rs. 5 crore in 2010 for producing Aata Pata Lapata. The film never released because of litigation. The actor did not repay the loan which spiraled into a huge sum with interest.
