The CBI has filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court, supporting a plea by the father of actress-model Twisha Sharma to transfer the case’s trial outside Madhya Pradesh. Twisha was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12 this year. The CBI had earlier charged her advocate-husband, Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a former district judge, with dowry harassment, abetment to suicide and committing a crime with common intention.
In its affidavit on October 29, the CBI contended that the mother-son duo were influential persons in the area and were likely to influence trial proceedings and intimidate witnesses. The agency cited their previous conduct, including attempts to influence the probe by local police, using her decades-long presence in the state’s legal community. The CBI affidavit stated, “It is further submitted that respondent being a retired judge from district court, Bhopal, may influence trial proceedings and intimidate witnesses of the case. After the death of the victim, the respondent tried to manage the crime scene and also tried to tamper with the evidence.”
