The UNESCO on 31st October, on the occasion of World Cities Day, designated Bombay as a creative city. With this, Bombay entered the global network of creative cities, under the film category. The network brings together cities which base development on creativity in music, arts, folk crafts, design, cinema, literature, digital arts or gastronomy. The UNESCO added 66 cities to the list so that its total membership base is now 264.

The application for Bombay was submitted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on behalf of the mayor. BMC prepared the action plan in consultation with representatives of the Hindi film industry.
