WOMAN ACCUSING KARAN OBEROI OF RAPE ARRESTED | 22 June, 2019

The Oshiwara (Bombay) police on 17th June arrested the lady who had on 4th May accused television actor and singer Karan Oberoi of rape and extortion. She was held for alleged criminal conspiracy and filing false information in a second FIR on 25th May, alleging that she had been assaulted and threatened to drop the case against Oberoi.

The police, a week earlier, assured the Bombay high court that they would take appropriate action against the woman for allegedly conspiring to stage the assault on herself. The police produced her before a night magistrate and asked for her to be sent to judicial custody as she had filed a false case of the staged attack. She was granted bail almost immediately after her arrest. The woman was booked under IPC sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 182 (false information with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person), and 203 (giving false information).

Oberoi, who had been arrested on 5th May, got bail on 7th June after the Bombay high court observed that prima facie the rape FIR was doubtful.

Oberoi’s lawyer has written to Bombay police commissioner Sanjay Barve, DCP of the region, and senior inspector (Oshiwara police station) Shailesh Pasalwar, questioning their “pathetic investigation” into the “staged attack”. He decried the manner in which the lady was granted bail right after arrest.
