Pixar Animation Studios’ Hoppers (animation; dubbed; UA) is the story of how a young girl, Mabel, thwarts plans to replace a glade (an open space in a forest, where there are no trees) with a freeway. She tries to get the wild animals, including beavers, to sign a petition but fails. One day, she realises that her biology professor, Dr. Samantha (Sam) Fairfax, and her colleagues have secretly been developing a new technology to enhance wildlife research. Dubbed the Hoppers programme, the device allows a human being to hop into a robotic animal and experience life as that species. How Mabel uses the Hoppers programme to save the glade forms the crux of the story.
During her mission, Mabel meets with King George, the head beaver of the Superlodge, and becomes very friendly with him. She destroys a noise-emitting artificial tree which mayor of Beaverton, Jerry Generazzo, had installed to drive the animals away so that the freeway could be made without any opposition. With the tree gone, King George’s subjects start returning to the glade. Enraged by the renewed resistance of the animals, Jerry gets on the offensive. What happens thereafter? How does Mabel succeed in her mission? Do Mabel and Jerry see each other’s viewpoints?
Daniel Chong and Jesse Andrews have written a story which engages the audience in parts only. Jesse Andrews’ screenplay is long-winding and does get boring at times. Even otherwise, the animation characters don’t create such a place in the hearts of the viewers that they would be at the edge of their seats as the drama unfolds on the screen.
The voice acting ranges from the average to good.
Daniel Chong’s direction is alright. Mark Mothersbaugh’s background music is fair. Cinematography (by Jeremy Lasky and Ian Megibben) is appealing. Animation, visual effects and computer graphics are of a fine standard. Axel Geddes’ editing could’ve been sharper. Dubbing is very nice.
On the whole, Hoppers does not stand much of a chance at the Hindi box-office.
Released on 6-3-’26 at Metro Inox (3D; daily 1 show) and other cinemas of Bombay thru Jiostar India Pvt. Ltd. Publicity & opening: poor. …….Also released all over. Opening was dull everywhere.
