MADRAS HC REJECTS PLEA TO BAN ‘KARUPPU’ | 22 May, 2026

The Madras high court has rejected a plea to ban the recently released Tamil film Karuppu, starring Suriya, for showing judges, courts and the entire judicial system in poor light. A vacation bench consisting of judges G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayan held that they were not convinced that the portrayal of the legal profession in the film was beyond the limits of freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution, and dismissed the plea.

The petition was filed by advocate R.S. Tamil Vendhan and argued that Karuppu, directed by R.J. Balaji and produced by Dream Warriors, ridiculed the unique and independent judicial system in India and showed judges consuming alcohol and indulging in corruption. The petitioner contended that the film would prompt citizens to lose hope in the country’s legal framework.
