MIRA NAIR’S SON WINS NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY ELECTION | 5 November, 2020

Filmmaker Mira Nair’s rapper-politician son, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, has won a seat in the New York state assembly. Zohran was born and raised in Uganda. He moved to New York at the age of seven. His father is a political scientist and teaches at Columbia University.

On winning the election, Zohran tweeted: “It’s official: we won. I’m going to Albany to fight to tax the rich, heal the sick, house the poor & build a socialist New York. But I can’t do it alone. To win socialism, we need a mass movement of the multiracial working class as well. So let’s build one…”
