BOTH DIWALI RELEASES PROVE DAMP SQUIBS

Both the major Diwali releases, RAM SETU and THANK GOD, proved to be poor shows at the turnstiles.

Ram Setu took a fair opening on Tuesday (25th October) and netted Rs. 15.26 crore but it became clear the very next day that the fair collections were because of the Diwali holiday and festive spirit more than for the merits of the film, which were almost conspicuous by their absence. Collections dropped on Wednesday (Rs. 11.40 crore) and further on Thursday (Rs. 8.78 crore). The 3-day first week’s total was a dull Rs. 35.44 crore. The drop on Friday was even more pronounced. It fared poorly Overseas too.

Thank God also failed to find appreciation. After a dull start (considering that it was a Diwali release on Tuesday, 25th October) of Rs. 7.30 crore, collections fell fast and furiously on the balance two days of the first week. With net collections being Rs. 5.30 crore on the second day, and Rs. 3.35 crore on the third day, the 3-day first week’s total was a poor Rs. 15.95 crore. The second weekend started on an even more dismal note. Its collections Overseas were also rather poor.

High Tide bombed miserably in first week.

Ginna Bhai (dubbed) fared very poorly in 1st week.

Har Har Mahadev (dubbed) did not do well in the first 3-day week. It opened on Tuesday (25th October) to dull houses and did not improve thereafter too. The original Marathi version (see below), on the other hand, did very well in its first week.

Black Adam (dubbed and original English versions) did quite well in the first week of 8 days. In spite of pre-Diwali release, that too on an odd day (Thursday), the film netted Rs. 6.74 crore on day 1. Collections dropped on the second day which closed at Rs. 4.80 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were better at Rs. 6.02 crore and Rs. 5.70 crore respectively. The first 4-day weekend, therefore, closed at Rs. 23.26 crore. Collections during the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 3.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 3.09 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.39 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.75 crore. The Hindi dubbed version and the original Kannada versions together netted Rs. 2.05 crore on the first day of the second weekend in North India. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 3.15 crore and Rs. 2.81 crore respectively. Therefore, the second weekend’s total was Rs. 8.01 crore. Collections of North India for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2.16 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.56 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3.03 crore, Thursday – Rs. 3.18 crore. ‘GOODBYE’ OPENS POORLY DESPITE CONCESSIONAL TICKET PRICING

GOODBYE opened yesterday (7th October) to very dull houses in spite of the tickets being sold at concessional rates… GODFATHER (dubbed), which opened on 5th October (Dassera day), did fairly well on account of the festive holiday but collections dropped from the second day onwards. The original Telugu version fared better.

Vikram Vedha proves to be a resounding flop. Its poor initial and its high cost have turned out to be the biggest minus points. It started with a take of only Rs. 9.50 crore on day 1. Collections on Saturday and Sunday picked up but not to the desired levels. The net total on Saturday was Rs. 12.50 crore while on Sunday, it was Rs. 14 crore. After a rather unimpressive weekend of just Rs. 36 crore, collections declined during the weekdays. In fact, even the festive Dassera holiday on Wednesday (sixth day) did not much help the film. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was only Rs. 22.25 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 58.25 crore. The film would have to do over Rs. 175 crore to break even. With a star cast like Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan and with a trailer which was talked about, it was expected to open at around Rs. 20 crore. But that was not to be. Friday seems to have closed at Rs. 9.50 crore only.

Chup met with a disastrous fate in the first week all over. It netted Rs. 2.75 crore on the first day, reaping the advantage of the National Cinema Day when admission rates in over 4,000 cinemas across India were reduced. Collections on Saturday dropped because the word of mouth was negative. After a net total of Rs. 1.75 crore on Saturday, collections on Sunday went up but not to the Friday level. The second weekend for all the versions (Hindi as well as South language dubbed) put together started with a take of Rs. 8.75 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday shot up to Rs. 14 crore. The Sunday total was Rs. 14.50 crore. The second weekend, therefore, closed at Rs. 37.25 crore. The total for 10 days, therefore, touched Rs. 200.25 crore. ‘BRAHMASTRA’ SHINES IN FIRST WEEKEND, DROPS THEREAFTER

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva did exceedingly well in the first weekend but collections dropped during the weekdays. Even amidst the negativity in the trade and among the public, the high-on-VFX film managed to cross the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and the Rs. 150-crore mark by the end of the first week. While the 2D version did not do too well after the weekend, the 3D version fared better wherever it was released alongside the 2D version. The Telugu dubbed version did phenomenally well in the first weekend, surpassing the lifetime collections of many dubbed versions of earlier Hindi films. Its performance Overseas has also been fantastic. The domestic collections of the Hindi version on the first day totalled Rs. 31 crore. Collections on Saturday jumped to Rs. 35 crore, and further to Rs. 38.50 crore on Sunday. In this way, the first weekend’s total was Rs. 104.50 crore. The dubbed versions netted Rs. 10 crore in the first weekend. So, all the versions together netted Rs. 114.50 crore. Collections of the Hindi version on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 14 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 11 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 7.75 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 42 crore. The first week’s total of only the Hindi version was, therefore, Rs. 146.50 crore. The dubbed versions collectively added Rs. 6.50 crore to its kitty during the weekdays, taking the first week’s total to Rs. 16.50 crore. In this way, the total of all the versions put together for the first week was Rs. 163 crore. It may be recalled that right in its review, Information had predicted a first weekend of Rs. 100 crore or thereabouts and a 10-day total of Rs. 200 crore or thereabouts. To quote from our review: “Business of the 3D version in the initial days will be far, far more than that of the 2D version. It has the potential to touch or almost touch the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and touch or almost touch the Rs. 200-crore mark by the end of the second weekend. For those who are concerned not just about box-office collections but also about cost-revenue economics, let it be said that for correct business analysis, part of the huge investment in the film is actually to be amortised by dividing it among three films — parts one, two and three.”
