Annabelle Comes Home (dubbed) and the English original of the same name, which opened on Thursday, did fairly well in the first six days but collections dropped quite a bit as the 8-day week came to a close. KABIR SINGH came like a hurricane and swept the box-office off its feet.
Kabir Singh started outstandingly strong and held on wonderfully all through the first week. It joined the 100-crore club on the fifth day itself. It netted a whopping Rs. 20.21 crore on the first day. Collections increased by a little over 10% on Saturday (Rs. 22.71 crore) and shot up to Rs. 27.91 crore on Sunday, thanks to phenomenally positive word of mouth. After a weekend of Rs. 70.83 crore, collections were super-strong during the weekdays too: Monday – Rs. 17.54 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 16.53 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 15.91 crore, Thursday – Rs. 13.61 crore. By adding Rs. 63.59 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, it took its first week’s total to Rs. 134.42 crore. The love story is all set for a long run and will definitely join the Rs. 200-crore club very soon. Although one section of the public is criticising the film on social media (for showing the hero as one who drinks, smokes up and even beats his girlfriend but yet emerges a winner in the end), the collections reflect that that section is in a minority and its words have not had much bearing on the public.
Fastey Fasaatey is a box-office dud which fared poorly in 1st week.
Toy Story 4 (animation; dubbed) and the English original of the same name collected Rs. 4.50 crore in the first weekend, and another Rs. 1.75 crore in the weekdays. Its total for the first week was, therefore, Rs. 6.25 crore.

LATEST POSITION | 15 June, 2019
After a flying start (Rs. 41.50 crore, not Rs. 42.30 crore as mentioned in this column last week) on Wednesday, Bharat dropped to Rs. 28.50 crore on Thursday. The seven days thereafter were as follows: on Friday, it fell down to Rs. 20.25 crore; collections picked up on Saturday (Rs. 25.50 crore) and Sunday (Rs. 26.50 crore) but the jump was not as much as it should’ve been. The India-Australia World Cup cricket match on Sunday was a formidable opposition, of course, but the figure of Saturday (as also of Thursday and Friday) gave an indication that the film was on shaky grounds. The fears started to come true after the five-day weekend as collections came down to single-digit crores: Monday – Rs. 9 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 7.85 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 6.40 crore, Thursday – Rs. 5.50 crore. In this way, while the first 5-day weekend closed at Rs. 142.25 crore, the addition to the kitty during the week days thereafter was only Rs. 28.75 crore. The film’s first 9-day week, therefore, closed at Rs. 171 crore. The film, this week, has the advantage of lack of major opposition. But overall, the film’s business has been a dampener for the trade after Salman starrers like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, which were all 300-crore-plus films. Little wonder then that shows of Bharat were decreased in multiplexes after the long weekend, and those of De De Pyaar De and a couple of other running films, increased.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (dubbed) and the English original of the same name did fair business in the first week. It opened at Rs. 3.10 crore on Wednesday (Eid). Collections dropped to Rs. 2.10 crore on Thursday. On Friday, the film netted Rs. 2.15 crore. Collections increased to Rs. 3.35 crore on Saturday, and decreased again to Rs. 2.85 crore on Sunday. The 5-day weekend closed at Rs. 13.55 crore. Collections on the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.10 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1 crore; Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.80 crore. In this way, the film netted Rs. 3.80 crore during the weekdays and thereby took its first 9-day week’s total to Rs. 17.35 crore.
Godzilla II – King Of The Monsters (dubbed) and the English original of the same name netted Rs. 2.40 crore in the second weekend, and another Rs. 1.40 crore during the weekdays. In other words, it added Rs. 3.80 crore to its kitty in the second week, thereby taking its 2-week total to Rs. 23.95 crore.
Aladdin (dubbed) and the English original of the same name collected Rs. 3.20 crore in its third weekend, and Rs. 2.10 crore during the week days. That is to say, it added Rs. 5.30 crore to its kitty in the third week, taking its total for 3 weeks to Rs. 49.30 crore.
De De Pyaar De added Rs. 2 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 1.55 crore during the weekdays. In this way, it added Rs. 3.55 crore to its total, and took its 4-week total to Rs. 91.75 crore.
LATEST POSITION | 8 June, 2019
Bharat was off to a flying start on Eid (Wednesday, June 5) and although collections in the morning shows were not great at many places, they became solid from 12 noon. The film managed a net total of Rs. 42.30 crore on the first day, which is the highest for a Salman Khan starrer. Collections dropped by 30% on the second day – despite Baasi Eid – because of generally negative reviews and reports. The second day closed at Rs. 29 crore. The question on everyone’s lips in the trade is whether the film is another Tubelight – the answer to which is ‘No’. The other question is whether the film will join the 200-crore club, to which the answer is ‘It will not’.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (dubbed) and the original of the same name didn’t open too strong. It netted Rs. 3 crore on Wednesday (June 5) and collected Rs. 2 crore on the second day.

In this way, it netted Rs. 15.10 crore in the 4-day weekend. Collections on the first two days of the weekdays were good but once Bharat opened on Wednesday, the drop was perceptible. It collected Rs. 1.80 crore on Monday, Rs. 1.85 crore on Tuesday, Rs. 0.80 crore on Wednesday, and Rs. 0.60 crore on Thursday. Its total for the weekdays was Rs. 5.05 crore. It collected Rs. 2 crore on the first day of the second weekend, Rs. 3.15 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 3.80 crore on Sunday. After a second weekend total of Rs. 8.95 crore, the collections during the weekdays were also quite good: Monday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.70 crore. It, therefore, added Rs. 4.90 crore to its kitty during the weekdays. Its total for the second week was, therefore, Rs. 13.85 crore. Total for 2 weeks: Rs. 44 crore.
De De Pyaar De fell 50% in the third week, collecting Rs. 11.30 crore. It netted Rs. 1.75 crore on day 1 of the third weekend, Rs. 2.50 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 3.40 crore on Sunday. In other words, it collected Rs. 7.65 crore in the third weekend. Collections during weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Wednesday (thanks to opposition of new release Bharat) – Rs. 0.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.45 crore. By adding Rs. 3.65 crore during the weekdays, it took its third week’s total to Rs. 11.30 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 88.20 crore.

PM Narendra Modi could not do much in its first week and although it got a boost due to Modi’s election victory a day before its release, the overall collections were not exciting enough. It started slow with a take of Rs. 2.35 crore. Collections increased to Rs. 3.25 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 4.65 crore on Sunday. After a weekend of Rs. 10.25 crore, the collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.15 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were hardly impressive – Rs. 2.50 crore and Rs. 3 crore respectively. With the weekend closing at Rs. 7.25 crore, it was clear that the film had no future, and collections during the weekdays only proved that: Monday – Rs. 0.95 crore, Tuesday – Rs. – 0.85 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.70 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.35 crore.
