AFTER ‘EMPURAAN’ PRODUCER, IT IS ACTOR-DIRECTOR UNDER SCANNER | 6 April, 2025

The Income-Tax department has issued a notice to Prithviraj Sukumaran, actor and director of L2: Empuraan, seeking details of earnings from films which he has co-produced. The I-T officials said that their probe into his income in 2022 showed, he hadn’t claimed remuneration for acting in three films but had taken payments as co-producer. The investigation against Sukumaran comes close on the heels of the Enforcement Directorate searches conducted in the office premises of Gokulam Gopalan, one of the producers of the film, and his company, Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance Co. Pvt. Ltd., on April 4.

Meanwhile, the ED on April 5 claimed to have seized Rs. 1.50 crore cash and allegedly incriminating documents about Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations.

L2: Empuraan ran into a controversy over references to the 2002 Gujarat riots. The producers agreed to delete and alter portions which had been found objectionable by the BJP and RSS, and, in fact, changes were made and the film was re-certified.
