AMAZON’S ‘TANDAV’ IN EYE OF CONTROVERSY: I & B MINISTRY SEEKS EXPLANATION FROM OTT PLATFORM | 18 January, 2021

Taking cognisance of various complaints that Hindu Gods and Goddesses have been shown in bad light in Amazon Prime Video’s web series Tandav, the I & B ministry on 17th January sought an explanation from Amazon Prime Video on the issue. The development came after BJP MP Manoj Kotak said yesterday that he had written to I & B minsiter Prakash Javadekar, asking for a ban on the series for ridiculing Hindu deities.

Tandav premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 15th January. It is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar who has also produced it jointly with Himanshu Mehra. Kotak, the MP from Bombay North-East, said that different organisations and individuals had complained that Hindu Gods and Goddesses had been ridiculed in Tandav. He added that the makers and actors of the series should apologise for hurting religious sentiments.

Ram Kadam, the BJP MLA from Ghatkopar West, sought deletion of the scene in the web series, in which Lord Shiva is allegedly ridiculed. The legislator said, he had filed a complaint in this connection at the suburban Ghatkopar police station.
