The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Calcutta were recently granted deemed-to-be university status. This has been done under section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act. The status will enable them to award degrees instead of just diplomas. The two institutes will also. henceforth be permitted to conduct doctoral programmes and research because of the new status.
