The Bombay high court on May 7 upheld the stay on the release of the tentatively titled Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar or Shaadi Ke Director Karan Johar on the ground that it infringes upon filmmaker Karan Johar’s personality and publicity rights. Dismissing an appeal by the film’s producer, Sanjay Singh, challenging a stay order of a single bench of the high court on the film’s release, a double bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice M.S. Karnik said that Karan had garnered “immense goodwill and reputation” in the entertainment industry in India and globally.
The court added that Karan Johar’s name had a brand value and he had the economic right to commercially exploit it as per his discretion.
