Veteran actor Sadhu Meher passed away at his residence in Bombay today (2nd February). He was 84.
Sadhu Meher had worked in Hindi and Oriya films. Orissa chief minister mourned the demise of the actor who hailed from the state and said, “He had received laurels for his brilliant acting skills. His demise is an irreparable loss to the film industry.”
Among Sadhu’s well-known films are Bhuvan Shome, Nishant, Ankur, Manthan, Safed Haathi, Mrigayaa, Inkaar, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Oriya film Bhukha and TV serial Byomkesh Bakshi. He was the first Oriya actor to have bagged the National Award for the best actor for Ankur (1974). He had also acted in Jai Jagannath which was made in 15 languages.
Sadhu Meher had directed Oriya films Abhimaan, Aparichita, Desire, Babula and Gopa Re Badhhuchhi Kala Kanhei.
Sadhu Meher was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2017.
