Veteran and renowned actress Shashikala breathed her last today (April 4) in Bombay. She was 88. She had acted in over a hundred films as leading lady, vamp and character actress. In fact, she was one of the few actresses of the Hindi screen who performed both roles, positive and negative, with such excellence.
Shashikala was part of films like Humjoli, Teen Batti Char Rasta, Bimla, Sujata, Aarti, Waqt, Anupama, Gumraah, Khubsoorat, Sargam, Chori Choriand Neel Kamal. She also did television in the latter part of her career. Her character as Frooti’s grandmother in TV serial Son Pari is remembered with fondness.
The veteran was awarded the Padma Shri by the government of Inda in 2007.
