‘TINCHARI MAI: THE UNTOLD STORY’ REVIEW | 12 September, 2025

Released last week in Bombay and U.P. to poor houses, N And N Production’s Tinchari Mai: The Untold Story (UA) is a drama film based on the true story of Tinchari Mai, a social revolutionary from Uttarakhand. It depicts her struggles and resilience after losing her parents and husband, and her subsequent fight against illiteracy and the illegal liquor trade in her community. She also made great efforts to secure drinking water for the villagers of Sigaddi.

Lokesh Nawani’s story of a lesser-known revolutionary has scant appeal for today’s audience. Her fame is restricted locally and hence the story doesn’t find resonance with the all-India audience. K.D. Uniyal’s screenplay and dialogues are boring and dull.

Performances are all below the mark. Nisha Singh does a weak job in the title role. Aarti Shahi is average. Deepak Bangwal is unimpressive. Pratima Bharti barely passes muster. Amit Dimri is ordinary. Pratyush Kaushal makes an average impression. Manav Pande is so-so.

K.D. Uniyal’s direction is weak. Music is nothing to dance about. Vidya Nath Bharti’s cinematography is below the mark. Editing is loose.

On the whole, Tinchari Mai: The Untold Story was better off being an untold story because not many are interested in spending money to know the story.
