DINYAR CONTRACTOR PASSES AWAY | 8 June, 2019

Actor Dinyar Contractor passed away on 5th June in Bombay due to age-related illnesses. He was 77 and had been admitted to Global Hospital where he re­mained for 29 days before his end came. He was recovering from a spine ailment. His last rites were performed at the Worli crematorium. The funeral was largely att­ended by the Gujarati theatre world.

Dinyar, who was more popular as a theatre actor and director, was excellent at comedy. He had a hawk eye to pick out plays that were plagiarised. He had been honoured with the Padma Shri this year. Prime minister Narendra Modi paid tribu­tes to Contractor on social media.

Among the films he had acted in were Baazigar, Khiladi, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and 36 China Town. He had also acted in TV serials Khichdi, Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma and Do Aur Do Paanch. Contractor had collaborated with Doordarshan when it launched DD-2, with the popular Gujarati show, Aao Mari Saathe. He had a pharma degree and was a medical representative before becoming a theatre actor-director.
